USS Picking Visits Apra Harbor, Guam
in February 1960

While I was at a Reunion, one of our shipmates had a copy of the August 1960 issue of  National Geographic which had an article on the bathyscaphe Trieste, which had just made a record-breaking drop to the bottom of the Marianas Trench.  The picture above is from pages 242-3 of that issue.  It shows our ship tied alongside the USS Edson (DD-946) who had taken over the DesRon 23 Flag from the Picking,.

I remembered that I had taken a picture of the Trieste from the foc'scle when we were tied up behind her.  Sure enough, I found not one but two, so below you have a couple of pictures of this famous vehicle taken from the Picking!

Looks like they were just hoisting her out
